Jean Voysey has been the Kitikmeot Regional School Operation's Student Support Consultant in Kugluktuk, Nunauvt, for the past thirteen years. She has devoted her time in Nunavut to advocating for students' needs first and foremost through inclusive practices, and respecting Nunavut's Inuit Quajimajatuqangit (traditional knowledge and cultural practices). Always the professional, Jean was relentless in her work towards inclusion and was often heard stating, "I love being in the schools, in the classrooms and with the children." Jean could be found leading inservices, delivering Department of Education initiatives, and providing workshops on the latest/progressive methodologies. But most of all, Jean could be found in a classroom at a desk, beside a student providing positive reinforcement. Jean would always make herself available to teachers and often on her own time, to meet the needs of the teachers requesting her support.

Prior to her time in Nunavut, Jean has worked in the school systems of British Columbia, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Ontario. During this time, she had direct experience with provincial curriculums, students with exceptionalities and diverse classroom management techniques.

Jean has devoted the past thirty year plus, not only to the promotion of education by teaching every grade level, working in bilingual school systems, but in the sincere interest of each and every student she has come to serve.

I am writing this testimonial on behalf of Jean Voysey. I have worked with Jean for many years in the field of education, especially concerning the area of inclusive education and meeting the needs of diverse learners.

Jean was instrumental in pushing for inclusive education in the Annapolis Valley Region of Nova Scotia in the 1980s, and spent many early years of inclusive education helping out children, families, teachers, teacher assistants, schools, and the school board come to a better understanding of the process of inclusive education and the development of individual programming for students.

Her specialty is in the area of high needs students. She has a great knowledge and tons of experience with dealing with children requiring help due to various cognitive, physical, and behavioral difficulties. She puts care and time into the process of teaming with others in order to develop SMART (specific, measureable, attainable, realistic , time-based) individual education and transition plans. She has worked with all age levels.

I have had the privilege of working with Jean for over thirty years. Her care, dedication and genuine love for people and the work she does speaks highly of her abilities as a consultant. Working with Jean has taught me a lot about the development of individual planning and caring for individuals with needs, whether they are of a cognitive, physical, or behavioural nature.

I worked with Jean around FASD in northern Canada for five years. Her knowledge and understanding of the subject is amazing. Jean wanted everyone to understand how alcohol affects the individuals and how we can learn to make changes in the environment so as to help the individual function better in it. During this time Jean and I facilitated workshops, worked with community groups and delivered programs to many remote areas in the Arctic. Teaching workshops and running programs in a multicultural environment to diverse groups of people has challenges, Jean was always aware of her audience and was careful to keep them engaged and would adapt her workshop to suit every group.  She was also careful to respect the cultural differences of her audience and made the workshops a pleasant learning environment. Jean has much knowledge to share and is an engaging and successful facilitator.

It is my privilege having the opportunity to write this testimonial for such a well known, intelligent, creative, warm welcoming Student Support Consultant, Jean Voysey, who has held this position at Kitikmeot School Operations for several years. As Student Support Teacher at Quqshuun Ilihakvik since 2005, I have gotten to know Jean on both a professional and individual basis and on many occasions witnessed her devotion, dedication, consideration, cooperation and commitment to her job. She welcomed her position with enthusiasm, pride, and efficiency in performing exceptionally super with admiration and determination.

Jean has been extremely instrumental in providing me, along with all other regional student support teachers, with the much needed resources, tools, and advice to successfully deal with the many ups and downs we encounter on a daily basis. No matter what problems tended to surface, all one had to do was contact Jean for assistance. She always knew the direction that was to be taken.

Within her position at KSO, Jean had to do a lot of travelling to different schools within Kitikmeot, but she always provided her student support teachers with contact number at all times. She was very adamant about being available at all times if and when needed.

During SST monthly conference calls, conducted by Jean, there was always valuable information passed on that was very helpful to all participants. Jean was very punctual all times. Jean’s strengths, ambition, punctuality, and effectiveness have gained her much recognition among all Regional staff, students and community members. She is a pleasure to be around and exhibits high potential to undertake any occupation in society that she desires.

Jean always excelled in the many different in-services hosted by her. Her super organization skills, presentations, and activities were all a reflection of her many creative skills and knowledge. Participants were greatly appreciative and well informed on each topic at hand whenever they attended one of Jean’s in-services. She had such an unique way of making everything so enjoyable and interesting.

Jean loves children, especially the students with disability. She gloried in focusing her attention on the critical importance of helping implement classroom strategies that meet the needs of each and every child. She is very knowledgeable about a broad range of strategies that enhance teachers’ capacity to create orderly, productive learning environment and students’ capacity to benefit from instruction.

In summation, Jean Voysey, would be a welcoming asset to any position for which she applies. Her knowledge, devotion, dedication efficiency, creativity i.e. all contribute to an outstanding, hardworking, individual that any school would be proud to have!!!
